Welcome to ED 2255, Summer II 2011!

List some ways that a blog could be used with the students in your classroom. State possible advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Some advantages are that technology and internet make it easier for people to communicate with each other. It can be accessed from many places and lets students work on projects at their own pace if needed.
On the other hand, students who do not have internet access at all times of the day will be left at a disadvantage. I think that especially younger students would have difficulty staying on task, since they'll probably be easily distracted with something as big and easily accessible as the internet.

  2. An advantage might be that all students can participate in the discussion even those students who are typically shy during class will have an opportunity to have a voice in a blog. A disadvantage could be that not all students have internet access at home. Therefore, a blog discussion assignment could be assign during class time if computers are available.

  3. Some advantages for using blogs in a classroom environment consists of generating collaborative discussion, a chance for students who are shy or passive to voice their own opinion on their own time, a way to write out thoughts and views rather than discuss them verbally, and an organized way to reflect on past discussions. Some disadvantages could be the risk of inappropriate or offensive comments by the students without the proper safeguards.

  4. I think blogs could be very useful in classrooms because students can express themselves through writing. Another reason is they can become actively engaged in what other students are saying. However, the disadvantages of using blogs is that some students may not want to express themselves. Another reason is some students may feel express themselves in ways that are deemed inappropriate.

  5. There are many ways that blogs can be used with students in the classrooms. Discussions can be started, involving students who may not otherwise contribute to class. Students can keep journals which allow more of a freeflow of ideas to enhance creativity. Students become more able to utilize computers and the internet, and communicate with each other in multiple ways both in and outside of the classroom. Students can create blogs for historical characters, allowing them more creative ways to explore more "dry" subjects. All students can keep blogs, regardless of exceptionalities as well.

  6. Christina T. Advantages in the English department are limitless. One idea is to have students share work...things they have written, and comment/peer edit. Another is to continue discussions outside the classroom...Talking about themes in poetry in class, and then posting a poem and having them brainstorm and discuss possible themes that can be discussed the next day..a way to link education between home and school.

My main concern is students not having access to the internet to take advantage of this. A friend of mine sets up his laptop, where he has a limited access account set up for students..basically all they can do is internet and Microsoft Applications. They sign up on a sheet requesting time and he is in the classroom during times the laptop is requested (lunch periods, before and after school) so this is supervised, but it is a way around this disadvantage so everyone can take advantage and benefit from this.
